How do I make a .pat from a text document? I downloaded a pattern that I want to make into a .pat file.

All pat files are txt files. Go to the settings/materials define your material, on right choose surface or cut pattern, new window will open, choose new, then custom and import then find your *.pat file

a Pat file is pretty much a text file, open the file and compare it to one in revit... Add the model or drafting switch as appropriate, then rename the file with the .pat extension.

Hey, could you please explain to me how to create custom fill paterns? I know you create them in notepad, but i dont understand the shifting and offset thing. Thanks in advance =)

The only way you will understand is to get in there and get dirty...  What I would do if I were you, is work on how you want your pattern to look on a unit scale (i.e. - a line that is 3 units long and 4 units wide...)  Now you enter in the start coordinates, which is where that line begins drawing, then you draw for some x distance.  The offset is how much in the vertical direction until the next of the same line is drawn.  The shift is how much in the horizontal direction will occur prior to drawing the same line again.

so I start out like this:

0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 5, -8

this line is angled at 0 degrees, will draw 5 units, and then be "up" for 8 units. (the -8 is a rusty part for me, so I'd verify that I'm correct, because I'm shooting from memory).  This segment will be drawn over and over and over... but it will be offset 1 unit vertically, resulting in a line that looks kinda like this:

_____        _______        _______

_____        _______        _______

_____        _______        _______

now if I put in a shift, it would look like this:

_____        _______        _______

    _____        _______        _______

        _____        _______        _______

____        _____        _______        _______

the line right above the word the at the beginning of this sentence is from the column prior to what I have shown.  Now this gets even trickier when you start putting in angles, making a simple hexagon can be quite challenging... good luck

Thanks alot TABEST!! That really helped me get a good understanding! Just to confirm my thoughts, the number pattern goes angle, x origin, y origin, shift, offset, how long the lines are horizontally drawn, the distance between the start and finish of the horizontal lines?

I believe the angle is at the beginning, it has been about 6 months or more since I was last in the .pat file.  but if you find the one with Revit (which Mr. Spot refers to) then in there it explains the format (poorly though).  Also, alittle note to remember, these lines wrap around, in all directions in weird ways...  I tried to get a pattern kinda like this:

|/|  |/|  |/|  and ended up having to make it  with horizontal lines that started and stopped at given points, because when I tried to use angled lines, it started looking horrible, and I couldn't get them to do what I wanted...
