I am using Revit 2010 and have had limited formal training. I have the Mastering Revit Achitecture 2009 book. During my training class they went through editing families. Of course now that I'm back at my desk I am lost once again. As I recall they edited or modified families outside of the project. When I try and edit the family withing Revit the option is greyed out on the dialogue box. I am simply trying to change the profile and size of some wall sweeps and window mullions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dan Iacovoni

What you are saying is You are in a project, then you pick in a family and in the menu bar the option "Edit Family" is Greyed??? You can't enter in the Family???

I have my Project open and am browsing the Project Browser on the left side of my screen. If I go down to Families and try to click on one, I can duplicate it and rename it from here. But their is also an "edit family" option which is greyed out. I am currently goind outside of Project to the RAC2010 file and opeing families their to edit them and make changes. I am trying to create new wall sweeps, but the only option that comes up in wall sweeps is "Cornice". Of course I don't like this one and want to create my own. I cannot even find "Cornice" which it says is under a sub-catagory of "Walls". This does not show up in the Project Browser.

Ohh, now i understand, those families are by default the System families, what to do to create your wall sweep is, File>new>family and choose the right family, in this case you go to a "Profile" family, in the family you gonna create a 2D shape to your sweep, save the family, give it a name then "Load into Project", in your project you go to wall sweep and you have the "Cornice" by default, enter in the properties of that, duplicate and give a new name, then CHANGE the "PROFILE" to the new one you have already created...

OK, I am very close now. I have created alternate profiles as you have suggested. I have loadedthem into my project and can see them in the Project Browser under "Profiles". When I activate wall sweeps though it still comes up the the Cornice as the only option and if I do a Type Parameters it lists the cornice uner System Family. How do I get this to look at my other profiles.

Again: "in your project you go to wall sweep and you have the "Cornice" by default, enter in the properties of that, duplicate and give a new name, then CHANGE the "PROFILE" to the new one you have already created..."

Thank you for your patients, I finally got it. Was trying to load a new family rather than add to the one already there. Thank you again for all your help.
