Trying to create a generic model fireplace with two levels of interest: Ground floor fireplace, second floor media center. I've got a masked region with a sketched fireplace at the Reference level, but not sure how to show a second level for the media center.

Would it be easier to create one-level segments of the fireplace, and just stack them in place?

1. You can turn off the visibilty of the family objects instead of using a masking region.

2. Not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish? Your use of the REVIT word 'level' is confusing me.

I assume in 3D and elevation you want to see the fireplace and entertainment center. That takes no special setup.

In plan view you want to see what exactly?

1. I wanted to use symbol lines on a second floor refernce plane of the generic family, assuming that when inserted into the project the second floor plan would show the appropriate symbol lines for that floor. There seems to be no option for other Levels, presumably for insertion purposes thus negating multiple "Levels" to sketch symbol lines in.

2. With regards to the one-level segments, I was thinking of creating a one storey generic fam of the fireplace, then create another generic fam for the media center stacked over. This way, symbol lines are guaranteed to show up. This method seems like a little more work though.

I see. Not sure.

I have never tried to create a family that has objects hosted by more than one level. My hunch is it cannot be done as a single family.

Looks like separate families it's going to be. Thanks dgcad.

The concept of multi-leveled families has never occured to me but makes good design sense. For the time being I would build them seperately, get them in position and then perhaps 'group' them. Grouping will span multi-levels. If your levels vary from floor to floor and you want to use the same group you would have to create new group for each floor to floor differential.

On the topic of stream lining this family challenge of yours, using yes / no parameter types and visibility control you could actually include both of these objects within the same family. Then you just turn on / off the parts you want to see in each instance. You'd have to be careful if you have MANY instances because this approach may slow down your system because technically each instance would contain both objects.
