I am a new revit user, I want to draw some sloped roof rafters. Do I need to create a new family file? Any other tips would be greater appreciated.

I think there's a lot of different ways to do it. But I used In-Place family to do it.

Thanks for the reply but what is in-place family? Sorry for not being familiar with the subject.

Type in "in-place family" using Revit HELP....

An in-place family is a family created within the context of the current project. The family exists only in the project and cannot be loaded into other projects. By creating in-place families, you create components unique to a project or components that reference geometry within the project.

For example, if you need to create a reception desk that must fit between several other items in a room, you could design this as an in-place furniture family. If the original design ever changed, the in-place family would change accordingly.

 HTH

One caution about in-place families.  You only want to use these where you have one of a kind...  Everytime you copy these to a new place, REVIT has to build a new family. In place family for all the rafters at once will work.

If you want a 3D family and need multiple instances, look for some of the rafter families in the downloads.

I want to make a 3-d family should I use the structural complex truss template file to start or can I edit a structural family file - dimensional lumber file ie. rotate and cut the member to achieve an angled member! Thanks.
