Revit 2009; I have viewed a post similar to my question, but can not figure how to accomplish the goal.  I would like to kenote the exterior elevation with a keynote (element) and have it numbered and reflect the number and element type in the keynote legend.  (ie. 1  - Door, 2 - Wall, etc.)  Do I have to open this keynote text file, make a copy and write:

1 Door

2 Window

3 Wall

And then go to settings keynoting and link it because this does not work.

Help if you can.

 Thanks

JB

If you do numbering by keynote, then yes, do what you wrote.  If you do numbering by sheet, add your keynotes in the order you want the numbers and it doesn't matter what number they are in the keynote file.

After you change the keynote file, you always have to reload it.  To do that, you kind of fake REVIT out into thinking you've changed the file .... settings/keynoting/browse - (even those it is already shown) find your fileand click on open - ok.

You could also consider creating a Note Block (Annotation schedule) for the notes.  These are perhaps simpler to use and you don't have to update an external document.
