Thank you. What you said led me to immediately solve my problem. I should have figured this out without asking but thank you for your help.
The solution is this...
From the family editor, I clicked FILE > NEW > Generic Model (but this could be done with any family template). I purged all of the unwanted defaults out of it and saved to my desktop with the name "Generic Model RSH," RSH being my initials. I then changed the extension at the end of the name of the file from "rfa" to "rft, which is how you create a template file from a family file.
Then I simply placed that in the same folder where Autodesk keeps all the other template files. On my PC, that would be: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2020\Family Templates\English_I.
So now, instead of grabbing the standard "Generic Model" template, I open "Generic Model RSH" and it already has everything purged out of it.
