What could [possibly be the replacement of rytrace in later version/s of Revit? How could I possibly insert a scanned image from another file to be used in my exterior rendering? Thanks please help.

Revit creates a transparent alpha channel. Export your rendered image as a PNG or TIF file. You can then import it back into revit and place your image behind it.
