Is there anyway to convert a 3d base Autocad object to a Revit component other than using the import command?

depends what sort of base drawing we are talking about. The import command is the only way but it can be used in different ways.
If its a building model already in autocad, you could import it in as a massing element, using create mass. then you can pick the faces of the import to apply walls, floors, roofs, curtain systems...
