what is the best way to go about placing a wood trim around the bottom edge of a room. i have come across many sections for trim but can not figure out how to place it into the model as a 3d object.

You can go to Structural menu and put a "Wood Beem" around the room you want... can you put some screen shots to figure out what really do you want?

Do not use a Structural Beam to create architectural wall trim. To model wood trim around a wall face (ie: chair rail, base board, crown molding etc) you should use a wall based linear family and include your trim profile. You can also create and 'in-place' family right on the spot doing a 'solid extrusion'. You can nest the trim profile or sketch it in.

Use wall sweeps.  Load the profile and use the sweep.  you can adjust it in the properties to make sure it is sitting on the wall not in the wall.
