Hi,

Have been using revit city for a while and while I have been happy to help out users it is starting to piss me off. Firstly their seems to be more and more post form users who obvisouly have done even the most basic of the training coures. It would be much easier for these people to look up thier help file than post here.

also there is now loads of post form people asking for someone to give them a family. most of these people never upload famlies or give any positive posts where they answer people questions.

form used to be great but i think it is going down hill.

what do others think.

Hi KING, you have your point, and somethings, you have right, there are many people here who never upload ONE family to us, just take them and never say THANK YOU... Well, that's the spirit of "some people" (not all of them), when i start here (Revitcity) i think i did 2 or 3 questions and never get answer, well, today they Question and I am the answerer, many times they put there models and send to me by email to SOLVE there problems, but until now i never refuse nobody, when i know and i could i just answer and help, i don't charge anything for help, (not as some), when they need i stay here to help. I think this is the SPIRIT of the most REVITCITY users. But you have right when you say: "It would be much easier for these people to look up thier help file than post here." they are not worried first to go to "Help menu", they just come here and ask... ace times I have will of saying to them "GO TO F1" but...

Be well...

typhon i know you answer a lot of questions for people and i try to mainly because you can always learn a lot by doing so. i also don't mind answering some basic questions as i know help file does not always answer them correctly but sometimes the questions drive u mad at how simple they are. I also came to revit city when i was first learing and i was very greatful to mr spot and others who helped me out, but i had always at leat searched other posts and looked in the help file before hand.

perhaps what may be a solution is that users profile info (how long they have been a member, how many times they have posted, how many uploads downloads ect) should be in the post title so if i see an obvious USER someone who has downloaded 100's of famlies and never posts well then i could chose not to answer someone like that. i myself have stopped uploading content and if it was possible would remove all content that i have uploaded (with my 3 profiles i recently worked out my famlies have been downloaded over 1000 times) i have only ever downloaded about 50 famlies with all my profiles. i would mainly remove my famlies now due to the amount of companies selling famlies and the amount of people using my famlies and giving nothing back.

what may also be helpful if there was a pro section where people could post a question and that would be emailed to the top 100 users, these would then recieve a small fee say $1.00 for suppling the answer. revit city could charge $2.00 and make a profit. i would happilly donate any money i recieve to charity but then at least i would know that i am answering questions that people had already tried to solve themselevs as people will not normally pay for something without trying to look for the answer for free (ie help menu or searcing old posts).

anyone elses opions more than welcome

King, i understand what you say and how you fell, i upload my families here and until now have been downloaded over 3000 times and i only have download 288, and many of them it's to just see what it's because they don't have the image, many times i download and after open in revit i delete them... but you have a point, many things you say is right, i don't want a money for my answers, if i don't want to respond i just don't, sometimes (and you have right) i don't give a clue because the QUESTION IS SO BASIC...

There are probably 1000's of people who never post and only search and read topics. You just see only the bad eggs.

yes comercial companies hyjacking posts is very annoying. but then capclips advertises on this site so they are not going to get moderated.

i once asked to get paid for a famly that someone was asking for (i asked for €10,000.00 as a joke) and was told  by moderators this site is a FREE site,  that is once you don't advertise on it then you can advertise your company as much as you want in the posts themselves.

Howdy,

First off, I think Revitcity is great and I have had some fantastic help from very seflless users over the past few months.  I more or less learned Revit myself from tutorials and guides and I have found that often you learn more and become more skilled with the program by searching around and finding the solution yourself.  Also I have found that by actually searching the forum first I find that somebody else has already encountered the same problem I am trying to resolve and there is a solution already posted.  Posting a question on the forum is always the last option when I am truely stumped.  I am amazed that there are so many users on the site that respond to random questions so promptly that do it for free.  I admit I download families from time to time though I would say I end up not using and deleting probably about 3/4 of what I have downloaded.  I am reluctant to upload my own families as I am not sure about ownership and permission.  I think think the families I create for specific projects at work belong to the firm I am employed by.  Do I need permission from the partners to upload the families?  any thoughts?  anyhow, thanks again for your efforts and assistance, the site has really helped me out tremendously.  Please keep up the good work.

@alberto:

good to hear that your getting great help.  About the families, I too occasionally download families but am not allowed to upload families that I created at work.  But I do tell people often how to make ones for themselves.  Thats just a problem your going to get when decisions get handed down and not openly discussed.  It happens.  I think in a community such as this everyone contributes what they can and everyone benefits.

to typhoon and king revit, i responded in the lighlighted thead and will do so again.

The original poster vnd asked about advanced training in melbourne. he didnt ask about training available on this site, nor did he ask about downloading heaps of free families, nor did he ask how to questions. he just asked for info on advanced training.

im located in south australia, and their isnt a lot of choices for training, period, so i any help is appreciated, even if its in canada.

im not involved with cadclips , but have been a subscriber previously when trying to learn this difficult software, and even though it wasnt free, it did help explain things a tad better than the revit documentation did.

Grasping the family editor and family creation was/is a massive hurdle for an old 2d guy like me.

peace and love to all

King,

I resemble that remark!

Haha.

Honestly, I have found that Revit City has a lot of great users that are very helpful and the stuff they post is informative. I have made just a couple of posts and gotten great response to them. I have not really seen the negative side of the site much. Perhaps it would be best to ignore it? You can't do much arout it right? Can't get people to behave or act like you want them to in this world.

Here's a notion. Some people may just be downloading families because they are in a bind and need something quick...or more accurately, they probably don't know how to create a family in the first place. Revit is a big heavy complicated program and some people pick it up quicker than others. So some users may take while others give. It's kind of the nature of this life eh? I would just keep on keepin' on like you are doing and be helpul and assist others with your effort and good work. I think that is kind of cool don't you? Helping others learn! People are people, they are going to do what they do in this existence.

Try this on for size. Ever bring treats or cookies to work and some people just woof them down without a word while others may say..."hey..your wife bakes great cookies...thank her for me will ya!". It's kind of like that here. I am not equating families to chocolate chip cookies...but you get the idea. It's just a thought.

Also, on an online forum like this, I don't think it's a good idea to call out people. It's kind of that sow and reap thing. You point the finger at people and someone will point one back at you. That's that human nature thing again.

At any rate, keep up the good work. Just some observations.

Now if you will excuse me, I am going to go steal some families.

Ben
