fifthtexas, I know this is a rudimentary question, but are you selecting the second window before changing the dimension to 8'? When you change a dimension, it is going to move the object that is selected. Sometimes people forget to select the object that they want to move. When you change the witness line are you using the temporary dimensioning lines or a dimension object that you placed? The difference is when you select an object, Revit displays dimensions called temporary dimensions. Temporary dimensions disappear when you deslect the object. A Dimension object is a dimensions annotation object the you place and is permannent. Dimension objects do not disappear when you deselect an object.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! |

thanks for quick reply yes using temporary dimensions noticing this on everthing so i am doing something wrong. example place first window on level 1 wall in not exact position place second window further along. come out of window command. i then go to dimension where i want these windows placed. select first window modify dimension 6ft from edge of wall, then modify next window change dimension to 8ft from first window (centre to centre). second window changes ok, but then first window does not stay at 6ft changes back and vice versa. they wont be placed where i want them for some reason. seems to be a confict somewhere, from a internal wall along as this dimension also shows. any idea where i am going wrong thanks for your help regards fifthtexas

It sounds like you have two windows with a dimension from the wall to the first then to the second. If so, don't adjust the placement of your second window using the dimension string, use the temporary dimension - not the blue permanent dimension. REVIT assumes you are trying to adjust the placement of the first window. That is why both dimensions in your string are blue. You could also edit your orginal dimension string to get a reference point on the other side of your last window. Now when you select the window the correct two dimensions will turn blue. If available, everything in REVIT assumes dimensions in two directions. Adjust one side and both dimensions change but the overall distance from the two extreme references will not.

He should be able to use the dimensions string to change the dimension of the second window (assuming the dimensions string is witnessed to the window). He would just need to make sure he selects the second window BEFORE changing the length. When you use the blue dimension text to change the length of an object, it only applies to the object(s) that are selected. I have a video I'm trying to get uploaded, I'll post it when my computer begins cooperating with me again.

Pin the first window and try to adjust the dim of the second window. Lock the dimension between the first and the second window so they translate as one.

Pins and locks do work but too many of them will result in many problems in the future. If you learn to use the REVIT tools that are there, you can reserve the pins and locks for the important areas. The temporary dimensions are great! - Learn to use them.
