to show a 3d isometric of the foundations only, would there be a way to display only a selected wall type & turn off all others in a 3d view?   I created a 3d view and hid all model categories except walls and used the iso section box in Element properties, but that isn't quite it because I have other wall types obscuring the fndtn.

I am not in front of revit right not to test and see that this would work, but I think so.  Try picking one foundation wall and then right-clicking and and pick 'Select All Instances'.  I think this would pick all of your foundation walls.  You could then pick the option to Isolate Selected Items.

Assuming that your foundation walls are drawn as structural elements you should be able to hide non- streuctural elements (other wall types).

Alternatly you could do what mthurnauer sugested. Although I would select all walls, hide elements, show hidden, find a foundation wall, select all instances, and unhide. But it basically does the same thing.
